Clopidogrel

Plavix

Consider alternative

Your body turns this drug into its active form more slowly, so it may not protect you as well. A different blood thinner is usually suggested.

The genes behind this label

The guidelines read one gene for clopidogrel. Each card shows the two copies this person inherited and what they mean.

CYP2C19Your two copies: *1/*2

Intermediate metabolizer

One copy works and one doesn't.

Handles several SSRIs, acid reducers such as omeprazole, and the blood thinner clopidogrel.

What the guidelines say

What each guideline says about your result.

CYP2C19Intermediate metabolizer

In plain words
Your body turns this drug into its active form more slowly, so it may not protect you as well. A different blood thinner is usually suggested.
What it means
Reduced clopidogrel active metabolite formation; increased on-treatment platelet reactivity; increased risk for adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events
What the guideline suggests
Avoid standard dose (75 mg) clopidogrel if possible. Use prasugrel or ticagrelor at standard dose if no contraindication

FDA drug label

Consider alternative Evidence: moderateSee the FDA table (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, opens in a new tab)

In plain words
This drug may not work as well for you, which can raise the risk of heart problems. Your doctor may use a different drug to prevent clots.
What it means
Results in lower systemic active metabolite concentrations, lower antiplatelet response, and may result in higher cardiovascular risk. Consider use of another platelet P2Y12 inhibitor.
What the label suggests
Results in lower systemic active metabolite concentrations, lower antiplatelet response, and may result in higher cardiovascular risk. Consider use of another platelet P2Y12 inhibitor.

About clopidogrel

Clopidogrel (Plavix) is an antiplatelet medicine taken to lower the risk of heart attack and stroke, most often after an acute coronary syndrome or a coronary stent.

Used for
Lowering the risk of heart attack and stroke after an acute coronary syndrome (given with aspirin), and in people with a recent heart attack, a recent stroke or peripheral arterial disease. Widely used after coronary stenting.
