MDMA

Ecstasy

Use with caution

You have little or no activity of the main enzyme that clears MDMA. Studies have not shown that this makes MDMA poisoning more likely, and no genotype makes MDMA safe.

The genes behind this label

The guidelines read 2 genes for MDMA. Each card shows the two copies this person inherited and what they mean.

COMTYour two copies: rs4680A/rs4680G

Intermediate function

One copy works and one works less well.

Breaks down dopamine and other brain chemicals.

This result doesn't change the label.

CYP2D6Your two copies: *4/*4

Poor metabolizer

Neither copy works.

0.0 activity scoreTypical: 1.25 to 2.25

Turns on or clears about 1 in 4 prescription drugs. These include many drugs for depression, pain and ADHD.

This result changes the label.

Gene2Rx research summary

Use as directed Evidence: weakSee the drug page (Gene2Rx research summaries, opens in a new tab)

In plain words
This is the middle result for this gene. It is not linked to a stronger or weaker reaction to MDMA.
What it means
One rs4680 G and one A allele (Val158/Met158). Intermediate COMT activity; no distinct cardiovascular or subjective pattern was reported for this genotype.
What the research suggests
No genotype-based adjustment. Watch for unexpected cognitive or cardiovascular effects.

CYP2D6Poor metabolizer

Gene2Rx research summary

Use with caution Evidence: weakSee the drug page (Gene2Rx research summaries, opens in a new tab)

In plain words
You have little or no activity of the main enzyme that clears MDMA. Studies have not shown that this makes MDMA poisoning more likely, and no genotype makes MDMA safe.
What it means
No functional CYP2D6. MDMA clearance depends on CYP2D6 for no more than about 30% of its metabolism in people, and a single typical dose inactivates most CYP2D6 regardless of genotype, so the difference from other phenotypes is smaller than once assumed. No clear link between inherited CYP2D6 deficiency and acute MDMA toxicity has been demonstrated.
What the research suggests
Exposure may be higher than in normal metabolizers, but the size of the effect is not established. If exposure occurs, intensive monitoring of vital signs, temperature and fluid intake is advised.

About MDMA

MDMA is a substituted amphetamine that forces the release of serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline.
